Description:

This session will present the issues associated with pain and symptom management in women patients. Research-based information will guide a discussion that focuses on the following questions:?(1) Is the experience of pain and its subsequent assessment influenced by gender? (2) What barriers exist to the appropriate diagnosis & treatment of pain in women patients? (3) Which therapeutic research-based interventions are successful and how can these be appropriately shared among all health care professionals?

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session, participants will:
    1. Identify important diagnostic clues for pain that may be differentiated by gender.
    2. Learn through discussion various perceptions of pain experience and how this affects its definition and acknowledgement
    3. Recognize and list specific barriers to appropriate pain identification & treatment.
    4. Learn the concepts of holistic communication as a process for meaningful nursing intervention in addressing pain & symptom management.
