Description:

There is presently a great emphasis on curative therapies in modern medicine. At times, such treatment comes at the expense of caring for pain and suffering. In this presentation, Dr. Kane will discuss the nature of suffering and the goals of medicine. He offers a convincing argument for careful re-examination of the current emphasis on cure rates–both for pediatric and adult patients.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Cite evidence for the importance of minimizing suffering and improving quality of life for seriously ill patients.
    2. Examine the nature of human suffering and obstacles to the relief of suffering in modern medicine.
    3. Describe the concept and the principles of palliative care.
    4. Illustrate a model of care that incorporates palliative care into the mainstream of medical therapy for seriously ill children.
    5. Examine the rationale of pain treatments based on mechanisms of pain perception.
