Description:

The spiritual dimensions of care are sometimes the most challenging for the provider of palliative care. This presentation provides a discussion of spirituality, along with a review of frameworks for assessing and intervening to relieve spiritual suffering at the end of life. In addition to this review, the speaker provides her own succinct framework of the 5 basic spiritual needs of the dying patient in this interesting and informative presentation.

Learning Objectives:

    1. To list dimensions of spirituality that provide the foundation for support and intervention in palliative care.
    2. To review frameworks for assessing the spiritual needs of the patient and family facing life threatening illness and death.
    3. To describe effective strategies for spiritual assessment.
    4. To describe interventions to relieve spiritual suffering.

This approval meets Type II criteria for mandatory continuing education requirement toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
