Description:

This session will include overview of current recommendations for nutrition care in renal patients, emphazing nationally based recommendations for protein and calorie requirements. Discussion of mineral requirements will include current strategies for avoidance of mineral imbalance and calcium loading. The use of vitamin D analogs for treatment and prevention of secondary hyperthyroidism will combine with a discussion of therapy strategies for several forms of renal bone disease. Pre dialysis and dialysis patients will be the focus of the presentation.

Learning Objectives:

After taking this course participants will be able to:
  1. State the current recommendations for protein and calorie intake in the hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and pre dialysis patient.
  2. List two factors associated with metastatic calcification in the dialysis population.
  3. Describe the advantages of vitamin D analogs in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism.
